A look ahead to the 2015-16 NHL season

The NHL season gets underway next month and hockey fans from all over the globe will be starting to get excited ahead of the new campaign. Last season, the Chicago Blackhawks were crowned as the best team in the sport as they earned a 4-2 series victory over Tampa Bay Lightning to lift the Stanley Cup. This campaign, there are a number of teams who will fancy their chances of success ahead of the opening round of fixtures. Here are just a few of the leading candidates for the Stanley Cup this season:

Chicago Blackhawks

The defending champions will be eager to retain their Stanley Cup title this season but will be under severe pressure to achieve this feat. No franchise has defended their title since Detroit Red Wings earned back-to-back triumphs in 1997 and 1998 but the Blackhawks are in a great position to challenge this record. Chicago have won the Stanley Cup in three of the past six seasons and boast one of the best teams in the entire league. They should have no trouble progressing through the Central Division and, if they avoid serious injury problems, will be there or thereabouts in the playoffs.

New York Rangers

They have been so close to success in each of the past two years but New York Rangers have fallen short at the crucial moment. The Rangers finished as the best team across the NHL in the 2014-15 regular season and will be looking to press on and beat their inner demons this campaign. They boast an impressive roster that is full of talented stars but crucially, they have a number of experienced professionals in the side too. At the time of writing, New York Rangers are priced at 10/1 with Bet365 to win the Stanley Cup this term and they will be quietly confident of their chances ahead of their opening fixture against last year’s champions Chicago Blackhawks.

Tampa Bay Lightning

The 2014-15 runners up will be hungry to avenge last year’s finals defeat this season but they may struggle to replicate their performance in the upcoming campaign. While Lightning should win the Atlantic Division with relative ease, their playoff rivals have all strengthened considerably in the offseason while Tampa Bay haven’t performed as well in free agency despite bringing in Steve Griggs as chief executive officer. Lightning have a great team though and their decision to continue with their tried and tested players could ensure that they are competitive right through until the late stages of the postseason. They have a talented roster but may struggle to reach the Stanley Cup if their Conference rivals perform at their best.

Anaheim Ducks

Anaheim are one of the most famous teams in the NHL and are likely to reach the latter stages of the postseason at the very least this season. The Ducks have a relatively straightforward division and will be confident that they can represent the Pacific Division in the playoffs once again. Anaheim have one of the most attacking sides in the competition which is a clear advantage, although they can be caught on the counter-attack at times. It wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see the Ducks reach the Stanley Cup this year and, with a bit of luck, they may even go on to lift the trophy after the seven-game series.
